Custom Troop Neckerchiefs

The uniform is an important part of the Boy Scout program. The uniform makes Scouts a visible as a force for good and creates a positive image in the community. Scouting is an action-based program, and wearing the uniform is an action that shows each Scout's commitment to the aims and purposes of Scouting. Just as members of a sports team wear the same uniform, members of a Scout group are united as a team through their uniform.

The neckerchief has been a symbol of the Scouting movement since the beginning. Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, initially wrote in his 1908 handbook Scouting for Boys:

"The scarf, or neckerchief, which is folded into a triangle with the point at the back of the neck. Every Troop has its own scarf color, and since the honor of your Troop is bound up in the scarf, you must be very careful to keep it clean and tidy. It is fastened at the throat by a knot, or “woggle”, which is some form of ring made of cord, metal, or bone, or anything you like. The scarf protects your neck from sunburn and serves many purposes, such as for a bandage or as an emergency rope."

While most of the uniform is universal for all Scouts in the BSA program, one area where troops can add their own personal touch is with the neckerchief. According to the Boy Scouts of America's official Guide to Awards & Insignia , each troop chooses their own official neckerchief and style for wearing it. Boy Scout neckerchiefs can be worn in a variety of colors with contrasting borders. A neckerchief can be personalized with troop number, city, state or chartering organization. Special neckerchiefs may also be created and authorized by local councils for such events as council NYLT programs, OA lodge events, Woodbadge courses, Eagle Scout recognitions, National Jamboree contingents, or local summer camps.
