Custom Troop Neckerchiefs

The uniform is an important part of the Boy Scout program. The uniform makes Scouts a visible as a force for good and creates a positive image in the community. Scouting is an action-based program, and wearing the uniform is an action that shows each Scout's commitment to the aims and purposes of Scouting. Just as members of a sports team wear the same uniform, members of a Scout group are united as a team through their uniform.

The neckerchief has been a symbol of the Scouting movement since the beginning. Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, initially wrote in his 1908 handbook Scouting for Boys:

"The scarf, or neckerchief, which is folded into a triangle with the point at the back of the neck. Every Troop has its own scarf color, and since the honor of your Troop is bound up in the scarf, you must be very careful to keep it clean and tidy. It is fastened at the throat by a knot, or “woggle”, which is some form of ring made of cord, metal, or bone, or anything you like. The scarf protects your neck from sunburn and serves many purposes, such as for a bandage or as an emergency rope."

While most of the uniform is universal for all Scouts in the BSA program, one area where troops can add their own personal touch is with the neckerchief. According to the Boy Scouts of America's official Guide to Awards & Insignia , each troop chooses their own official neckerchief and style for wearing it. Boy Scout neckerchiefs can be worn in a variety of colors with contrasting borders. A neckerchief can be personalized with troop number, city, state or chartering organization. Special neckerchiefs may also be created and authorized by local councils for such events as council NYLT programs, OA lodge events, Woodbadge courses, Eagle Scout recognitions, National Jamboree contingents, or local summer camps.

The Moritz Embroidery Works can help you design a custom embroidered neckerchief for your troop. You can add your own custom text and unit numbers to one of our stock BSA®-approved designs or create your own custom design.

Pick your own colors for your neckerchief – with hundreds of combinations possible. All solid colors are available on our blank neckerchiefs with your choice of matching or contrasting sewn outer trim. Two-color body designs are also available. Orders can even "mix and match" to include various color combinations in order to fulfill an order minimum.

Neckerchiefs can come with either a straight/pointed or a curved/rounded bottom edge. Blank neckerchiefs, direct-embroidery and sewn-on emblems are available on any neckerchief style.

We only use the finest "wrinkle-free" poly-cotton fabrics to create your custom neckerchiefs and all neckerchiefs are hand cut, sewn and inspected before and after they are embroidered. Our standard official-size BSA® neckerchiefs are 49.5"x35"x35". Cub Scout sized neckerchiefs are available in 37"x25"x 25" for the smaller Scouts. Custom-made larger or smaller neckerchiefs are available at no extra charge; just let us know what you need.

Neckerchiefs are priced as low as $7.50 each based on quantity and minimum orders start at just 25 pieces. Production and delivery usually takes two weeks or less.

Ask the Expert: Designing a BSA Patch

Q: What items are required to be on my patch design?

All designs should reflect the ideals and values of the Boy Scouts of America and not infringe on the trademarks of any other organization without proper approval. Additionally, all BSA emblems must contain a Boy Scouts of America corporate identifier; either, the initials "BSA" (without any periods), the words "Boy Scouts of America," or the BSA fleur-de-lis.

Ask the Expert: "Embroidered Emblem" vs. "Patch"

Q: What is the difference between a custom "embroidered emblem” and a custom “patch”?

A: Absolutely nothing! Both names relate to the same product. As professional embroiderers we often use the trade or industry phrase, "embroidered emblem." Most customers (and most Scouts) simply refer to them as “patches.” Basically, the word “patch” is slang for “embroidered emblem.” Whichever name you use, patches or emblems, the end result is the same. Embroidered emblems have been used by Scouts to commemorate events, activities and achievements for generations – every great Scouting event comes with a patch! Patch collecting (and trading) is part of the Scouting culture.
