Getting Started with PatchScan™

Patches have been used by Scouts to commemorate events and activities for generations. Every council, OA lodge, and great Scouting event has it's own unique patches. Patch collecting (and trading) is a part of the Scouting culture.

To help Scouts and Scouters in the 21st century get all the facts about the patches in their collection, the BSA's Licensing Team has developed PatchScan™. Using the free PatchScan™ app, a Scout or Scouter can scan the special QR codes on the back of officially-licensed BSA patches and view all sorts of patch details for trading and collecting purposes.

How to Get Started with PatchScan™:

  1. Download the PatchScan™ mobile application (Android | iPhone).
  2. Find an Officially Licensed patch with a QR code on the back.
  3. Scan the QR code from the PatchScan™ application.
  4. Add the patch to your digital collection and view patch specifications.

Every entry in the PatchScan™ database gives you all the important stats on your patch — such as who issued the patch, when was it made, and how many were made. PatchScan™ QR code stickers are required on all official council shoulder patches (CSPs), Order of the Arrow lodge flaps and pocket patch sets, and jamboree shoulder patches (JSPs) produced today; and PatchScan™ QR codes can also be found on other special Scouting patches and patch sets as well.

In addition to the mobile app, which allows scanning individual QR codes, you can also browse the online PatchScan™ Patch Gallery to find any patch in the PatchScan™ system. You can browse patches by council, keywords or manufacturer.
