Ask the Expert: Neckerchief Sizes

Q: What is the standard size of a Boy Scout neckerchief?

A: Our standard triangular neckerchiefs match the official BSA neckerchief size and are 49.5" x 35" x 35". This is the ideal size for most Scouts and Scouters to wear with their BSA field uniform; it rolls nicely and looks sharp (and can also serve a sling or triangular bandage in a pinch).

Smaller Cub Scout-sized neckerchiefs are available in the official Cub size of 37" x 25" x 25" for Cub Scouts or smaller Scouts. Additionally, custom-made larger and smaller neckerchiefs can be made and are available at no extra charge. Your order can even mix sizes in order to fill an order minimum. Just let us know what you need and we'll get you the perfect neckerchief to fit your Scouts.

Custom Patrol Patches

Patrols are the building blocks of a Boy Scout troop. There are many ways help build a strong patrol identity and patrol spirit; among them are a cool patrol's name, flag, yell and emblem.

A good name sets a patrol apart from all others and provides patrol members with a special way of identifying themselves. The cloth patrol emblem is worn on the right sleeve of the Boy Scout uniform (under the American flag) and identifies and unites the members of a patrol.

The BSA's National Supply Division produces several stock patrol emblems for a variety of common patrol names, but if you have a more unique patrol name or want a more distinctive patch, call on the Moritz Embroidery Works to make custom emblems for your patrol.

According to the BSA insignia policies, patrol emblems must be 2-inches round with a tan border and background. Patrol emblem designs should be a simple icon with no letters or numbers and utilizing a maximum of only three colors. The Moritz Embroidery Works can help you create high-quality custom BSA®-approved patrol patches based on your own artwork and design or just a simple description.

Minimum orders are 50 pieces. Normal production and delivery takes 2-3 weeks. One-week “5-7 business day” rush-orders are accepted in most cases at no extra charge. Call us (toll free) at 1-800-533-4183 or request a quote online at moritzembroidery.com

Ask the Expert: Button Loop

Q: What is the purpose of a button loop?

A: It seems that almost every Scouting event comes with a patch ― summer camp, camporees, Scout derbies, training events, fundraisers, Scouting shows, and more. These "temporary insignia," as the BSA calls them, can be worn by Scouts on the right pocket of their uniform. According to the BSA Insignia Guide, only one such patch may be worn at a time. Sewing these type of event emblems on the uniform only to have to remove them and sew another one on a month or two later can become tiring. Scouts want the immediate recognition of their accomplishments. They want to display their patch as soon as they get it.

Event patches can be sewn to the pocket or suspended from under the pocket flap attached to the button. Adding a simple button loop to you event emblems allows Scouts to easily hang their emblem from uniform pocket ― no sewing, no waiting, no fuss (and easy to swap out when the next event comes along).

Button loops are phenomenal! This extra feature can help ensure that your event emblem gets worn by Scouts rather than just being tossed in a box with other keepsakes. This provides pride in participating (and give free marketing to your event).

Consider adding a button loop to your next event emblems. A 3/4"-wide braided button loop can be sewn at the top of practically any emblem. We can match the colors on your patch to your button loop. And if a Scout doesn't want to hang their patch, the loop can easily be removed with a pair of scissors.

Ask the Expert: OA Centennial Totem

Q: Are lodges required put the OA centennial totem on their lodge flaps and memorabilia items made in 2015?

A: 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of Scouting's national honor society - the Order of the Arrow. The Moritz Embroidery Works is excited to help OA lodges from across the nation celebrate the 100th anniversary of the OA and prepare for the National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC) being held in August 2015. The national Order of the Arrow committee created and approved an official centennial totem to give a symbol for the centennial celebration.

Including the centennial totem on OA emblems is not mandatory, however it is strongly encouraged. Ray Capp (National OA Committee Chairman) stated that "it is our hope that all lodges will use the totem as part of all their centennial celebrations including lodge flaps and other memorabilia which will be used to commemorate both the 100th anniversary and the 2015 National Conference… We are also asking lodges to consider issuing a single-piece 100th anniversary lodge flap (not NOAC related) bearing the totem."

The OA has developed a comprehensive branding guide to help provide direction on how to appropriately utilize the centennial totem, logo and theme statement. Additionally, as a way of preserving the Order’s celebration of the centennial, lodges are being asked to send one of each centennial item to the National Scouting Museum in Irving, Texas. These items – including flaps, patches, shirts, buckles, etc. – will be put into a large collection to archive the Order of the Arrow's 100th anniversary.
